The Red Pyramid Facts

The Red Pyramid that is located in Dahshur, a necropolis along the Nile River, is the second largest pyramid of Egypt with respect to area of its base. It is famous for the colors of its building stone that are red and look truly unique among all other ancient pyramids of Egypt. Here are some facts about Red Pyramid.

1. History

Pharaoh Sanefero, who was the founder of forth dysentery in ancient Egypt, constructed this pyramid near the approximate era of 2613-2589 BC.  This was one of the three pyramids in Dashur that were constructed by Pharaoh Sanefero.

2. Reason behind Name

In fact, the Red Pyramid has this name just due to this reason that white Tura limestone that was the upmost layer of this pyramid, as removed by people in the middle age. Just the red colored lime stones were left behind that became the cause behind this name.

3. Modifications

Today, many prominent modifications and alterations have been made in the old structure of Red Pyramid, just to make it more attractive for the visitors.

4. Ancient tallest structure

At the time of its construction, this Red Pyramid was the world’s tallest structure that remains with same record for hundreds of years. The total height of this pyramid is 341 feet.

5. Bat Pyramid

Local people called this famous pyramid with another name as well that is “Bat Pyramid” or “el-haram el-watwat”.
