Puffer Fish Facts

Puffer fish belongs to family Tetraodntidae. This is family of those fishes which have four teeth. In case of puffer fish, all four teeth are fused together to make a beak. There are around 150 species of this fish in the world. Here are some facts about Puffer fish.

1. Habitat

Puffer fish is mainly found in tropical and sub tropical marine waters. However, few verities of fish are also found in fresh water.

2. Defense mechanism

Puffer fish is known for its unique defense mechanism. It can ingest a lot of water and get a shape of ball; in this situation its predators cannot attack it. Their elastic stomach helps them in holding lot of water.

3. Most poisonous fish

Puffer fish are most poisonous fish in this world. Gallbladder of fish is very poisonous and has enough poison that it can kill many humans at a time.

4. Fugu Chef

Puffer fish is called as Fugu in Japan and Japanese people love to eat it in different forms. However, if not handled properly, it can cause damage to the people. So, only licensed chefs can cook it, which are called as Fugu chefs.

5. Bad swimmers

Unlike other fish puffer fish is bad swimmer. They cannot swim for long distances, so their defense mechanism helps them to avoid predators.
