Porcupine Facts

Porcupine is an interesting and amazing animal that is best known for its long spikes around its upper part of body. It is also known as quill pig that is its typical American name as well. Here are some interesting facts about porcupine.

1. Rodent

Being having pair of fast rising incisors, porcupines exactly fulfill the definition of rodents. Among all other rodents, porcupines are considered as 3rd biggest rodent with respect to their size.

2. Physical Description

Porcupine is usually considered as slow animal due to its round body shape. The range of total length of porcupine is 35 to 50 inches including long tail having length 9-10 inches. Similarly, the average weight of porcupine is 6-15 kg that depends upon their species and age.

3. Eating Habits

Normally almost all porcupine species are herbivorous animals and their favorite food is small plants, cabbage and leaves.

4. Habitat

Almost all continents are the habitats of porcupine like Asia, Africa, South America, North America and Some parts of European continent as well. Moreover, they can be seen on trees, hills, deserts and forests.

5. Spikes

Spikes are the best weapon of porcupines that keep them safe from predators, but at the same time these spikes become the source of danger for them when human being like to decorate their clothing and other things with their spikes.
