Landfill is an old method for waste disposal. However with the advancement of technology this method took more refined shape and now it is a science in itself. In this process of landfill trash and garbage is dumped by a scientific process. In other words, it is locked inside the earth. Here are some facts about Landfill.

1. Constitutes of landfill

Landfills are filled with a large number of things. 30% trash is consists of paper, 16% is plastic and 18% is food scraps. By proper segregation, man of these items can be recycled.

2. Environmental threat

Landfill release many toxic chemicals, which are released into the underground water bed and contaminate it. Moreover, it releases methane gas, which is a cause of global warming.

3. Largest landfill

Two human structures can be seen from the outer space on the earth. One is Great Wall of China, while other is a landfill. Fresh kills landfill is located on the western shore of Staten Island.

4. Trash generation

Only American throws more than 2 million plastic bottles in garbage, in single hour and 90% of these bottles end in landfills and only 10% are reused or recycled.

Only in America, people throw 1 billion shopping bags every year, which create 300, 000 tons of landfill waste.
