10 Indiana Facts

The first person who explored state of Indiana was the French called Robert Cavalier. In 1679 to 1680, France and Britain came head to head to fight for the North America in which Britain succeeded finally in1793. After the French and Britain struggles came the American reign when George Rogers Clark led American forces to the area against Britain for the American rule in the revolutionary war. Before Indiana became state of America it faced several local Indian uprisings. Before are given some facts about Indiana.

1. Auto Race

The first ever auto race held in America was held in Indiana on its Indianapolic motor speedway. The winner won the race by running his car at 75 miles per hour with prize money of 14,000 dollars. Every year on Memorial Day, indianapolic 500 is held.

2. Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, the great US president was 7 years old when his family moved to Indiana. He spent all his boyhood in a county of the state.

3. P-47 Fighter Plane

During the World War II, the P-47 planes that were used in the war from America were manufactured in evansville at republic aviation in the state of Indiana.

4. Raggedy Ann Doll

The famous raggedy ann doll was created by a lady from indianapolic in 1914. The lady who created this doll was Marcella gruelle.

5. First Baseball Game

Baseball is played in every state of America for more than a century now. The first baseball game was played in Indiana in 1876 in fort Fort Wayne.

6. James Dean

James dean, the famous movie star of 1950s was born in Indiana. Among those famous movies he gave are “were east of Eden” and “rebel without a cause”. He died at the age of 24 in a road accident.

7. Parke County

The parke county of Indiana has 32 covered bridges and it is called the covered bridges capital of the world.

8. Great Lakes State

The shoreline of Indiana with the Lake Michigan is not more than 40 miles in area, but still Indiana is called the great lakes state which holds no logic as such.

9. Forests

Before this state was ever explored by humans, the total of 80 percent of the area was covered by forests with more than 100 species of trees. But now the 17 percent of the total state area is left forested.

10. Indiana

Indiana means “state of the indians” but despite from its name, only 8000 native Indians live in this state today.
