Berlin Wall Facts

Berlin Wall also called “Iron Curtain” was a construction in the form of combination of walls, watch towers and trenches. This Wall was constructed to divide Eastern Berlin from Western Berlin and remained a questionable mark till the time of its demolition. Here are some facts about Berlin Wall.

1. Reason behind construction

West Berlin was economically much developed part of East Germany than East Berlin that was under the control of Soviet Union. This well-developed infrastructure was a source of attractiveness for people of Eastern Berlin after World War II, so they always try to enter in Western Berlin. The government of Eastern Berlin decided to construct a barrier between Eastern and western Berlin in the form of “Berlin Wall”.

2. Construction

The construction of Berlin Wall was begun during the night of 13th August 1961 by government of Eastern Berlin. Initially, it was just a barbed wire, but later constructed with concrete blocks.

3. Generations

In terms of construction and building material, the numbers of generations of Berlin Wall are four. These four generations were held during 1961, 1962, 1965 and 1975 respectively.

4. Checkpoint Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie remained the most famous border crossing among all other eights ones in the Berlin Wall. It remained throughout a passage to cross the Berlin Wall by Non-Germans and Allied Personnel.

5. Fall

9th November 1989 is the actual date of starting demolition of Berlin wall. However, the wall was officially demolished on 13th June 1990.
