Butterfly is an insect, but its eye catching colors attract everyone. They are considered as symbol of beauty and innocence. Many butterfly species live in different parts of the world. Monarch Butterfly is one of them. This is known for its attractive colors. Here are some facts about Monarch butterfly.

1. Habitat

Monarch butterfly has a wide habitat and we can find it in North America, New Zealand, Australia and Canary Island. Madeira, Azores and some parts of Western Europe also know this butterfly.

2. Names

Monarch butterfly is called with different names in different parts of world. In Australia it is called as wanderer and people in United Kingdom call it as Milkweed.

3. Appearance

The wingspan of this butterfly is around 8 to 10 cm. It has a recognizable pattern on its wings, in black and orange colors. Males are slightly larger as compared to females. Females have darker veins on their wings.

4. Migratory butterfly

Monarch is a migratory butterfly. It migrates towards south in winters and come back to north in summer season.

5. Poisonous butterfly

Monarch is a poisonous butterfly and can kill other birds and insect, who want to eat it. It has Cardenolide Aglycones in its body, which makes it a foul tasting and poisonous butterfly. This is its defense mechanism against its predators.
