10 Lion Facts

The king of the jungle, lion is the biggest cat of Africa. Lions are considered brave, ruthless and magnificent creatures. It was a tradition for the rich people and kings to hunt the lion and kill them to satisfy their ego and pride. But this practice proved worst for the lions and today they are the specie in danger of extinction. Their skin is traded and their stuffed structures are placed in the drawing rooms for decoration even today. Lions may be the most ruthless but humans proved to be their masters.

1. Lions live in prides

No matter how big the killers they are, but they are social too. Lions live in groups, in wild. Their groups are called pride.

2. Manes

Lions have this trait. But only male lions have it. The purpose and origin of this trait is still unknown to the scientists and this has divided them with respect to their conclusions.

3. Living in pride

It’s not the emotion, but the group in which lions live. They like to live in pride because they can survive in the difficult times and their young cubs can also be protected from the predators roaming in the wild.

4. Spots on skin

Lions too have spots on the skin, but when they are cubs. When the cubs are born they have spots which disappear with the passage of time.

5. Hunting

In pride, the lionesses hunt while the lions do the job of giving them protection from the other animals.

6. Their prey

Lions can kill any animal from deer to elephant. They hunt with great power and in groups. Their groups and their power give them the courage to even kill an elephant.

7. Competition

Lions do not like competition therefore they kill their competitors whenever they feel the danger. Their common competitors are leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas etc.

8. Lions steal others’ hunt

The popular belief about lions is that they do not steal others’ hunt but they definitely do so, and to do so they sometimes kill the competitors.

9. Man eater

Though the popular man eaters are only tigers, but lions cannot be given a clean chit. Lions do attack the men especially when they are hungry or irritated. But they are not as notorious as tigers.

10. Nomads

Nomads are the young lions who are kicked out of the pride when they show the signs of maturity. These young male lions then form their own group and live on their own till they reach the maturity and strength to lead their own pride.
