10 Blue Whales Facts

Oceans are home to many strange and amazing lives. One of these strange and amazing lives is blue whales. Blue whales are not categorized as fish instead, they are called sea mammals. The reason they are called this is because they breathe air and give birth to live young. They have fur on their body and nurse their young with milk. There are some people who say that blue whale is the largest mammal ever existed on planet earth. Many a times, on sea voyage, the super thing is to see the whales on the surface of the sea. They are huge and very big. Below are given some facts about them.

1. The Length

Since it is said that blue whales are the largest and longest mammal on earth, they can grow as long as 100 feet in size. This could be imagined as two super size city buses.

2. Weight

With that much height it’s quite obvious that they weigh too much. Their average weight is 200 tones which can be imagined as the weight of 15 big buses.

3. The Tongue

The tongue of the blue whale is not ordinary. This tongue is huge in fact gigantic. The weight of this tongue is equal to 1 elephant and almost 100 people can fit in to the whale’s mouth.

4. Heart

The heart of the whale is 2,000 pounds in weight. The main artery pumping blood from heart is as big that a man can easily crawl into that. The heartbeat of the blue whale can be heard from 2 miles.

5. Sound

Blue whales are huge and they do everything that is huge. The sound they produce is equal to the sound of jet engine and they can communicate with each other at 1000 miles away.

6. Food

Whales eat krill as their main food. A single blue whale normally eats four tones of krill each day.

7. Blowhole

Whales have blowhole that can be as wide that a toddler can fit into it. At a time it sprays water as high as a three story high building.

8. Life Span

The oldest blue whale was found to have lived for 110 years. The average life span of blue whales in 80 to 90 years.

9. Hunting

In 1900 up to 1950’s 360,000 whales were killed to get the whale oil. They were hunted so bad that they are not only around 10,000 to 25000 in population.

10. Endangered

Whales are endangered; they are not to be hunted any more. But then they fell prey to sharks and killer whales and many of them injure due to their collapse with the ships.
