West Virginia became a state in 20 June 1863, during the civil war. It is 41st most populated and 39th most extensive state among 50 states of United States. It is the only state which has its sovereignty in union by proclamation from president of united state. Here are some facts about West Virginia.

1. History

It was a inhabitant area before the arrival of Europeans, used as a hunting land for north Americans. This part of Virginia now called West Virginia, was penetrated by explorers and trade of fur. It remained inhabitant up to hundred years.

2. Geography

The West Virginia is also known as mountain state. It is very hilly and rugged.  It has an highest mean altitude of 1500ft/457m. West Virginia is well drained, with very important rivers including tug fork, the big sandy river, the new river, the Kanawha. Population of West Virginia is 1,855,364. Its area is 24,230 sq m.

3. Economy

Apple, peaches, hay, corn and tobacco are the principal crops in Virginia. While boiler chicken, dairy products and cattle lead in market receipt. West Virginia is very rich in natural resources; it is a large producer of bitumen, natural gas, cement, coal and oil. They also have chemical, synthetic textile and glass fiber industries.

4. Government

The first constitution of West Virginia was ratified in 1862. The executive branch is headed by governor, elected for a four-year term. The state legislature has a senate of 34 members.

5. Higher education

West Virginia University is the leading institution of higher education in West Virginia State. Its main campus is in Morgantown.  West Virginia also has an extensive college system.
