Hoover Dam Facts

Hoover Dam is a concrete dam in the Colorado River in United States. It is between the Arizona and Nevada two states of United States. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936. It is called as Hoover dam as President Herbert Hoover worked hard for the construction of this dam. Here are some facts about Hoover dam.

  1. Most expansive project: At the time of its construction in 1931, it was the most expansive project in the history of US. It cost around $49 Million.
  2. Purpose: The dam was build to control floods. Another reason behind its construction was the irrigation. It was also used for generating electricity.
  3. Colorado River: It was constructed on the Colorado River, and during its construction the river was diverted as it was necessary to bore cliff faces.
  4. Location of dam. The dam was called as boulder dam as it was planned to build on Boulder canyon, but later it was decided that black canyon is a better place.

Largest man made reservoir: during the construction of this dam, largest manmade lake was created, which is called as Lake Mead. This lake is 110 miles long. Now a day it’s a tourists spot, and people come here for swimming and boating
