Desert Biome Facts

If a large area has similar communities of plants, animals and soil organisms, it is referred as Biome. Climatic conditions of a biome are also similar. When we talk about desert biome it is different from all others and usually most dried. Here we are discussing some facts about desert biome.

1. Rainfall

Rainfall is the most important aspect of a desert, as it receives very little rainfall. On average a desert gets 250mm to 300 mm rain in a year, which is only 10% if we compare it with rainfall of a desert.

2. Temperature

There is a vast difference in temperature of desert biome during day and night. On the average, the temperature of many deserts reaches above 40 degree centigrade and during night, this temperature falls below than -5 degree centigrade.

3. Vegetation

The vegetation of deserts consists of very limited range and truly very rare to found in other parts of globe. The common vegetation in deserts are shrubs and small trees like Brittle Bush, Turpentine Bush and Prickly Pears.

4. Animals

All the animals of desert biomes are carnivorous and mostly become active at night. Some common animals of deserts are like horned vipers, kangaroo rats, jack rabbits and antelopes.

5. Coverage Area

The desert regions of our earth contribute more than one fifth of total land area. The majority of deserts is found in Tropic of Capricorn and tropic of cancer.
