10 Michigan Facts

Michigan was the home of Indians before the white people came. The arrival of the outsiders started in 1618 by the British people and later followed on by the French explorers. It was 1668 when the first permanent white settlement began in Michigan. Britain ousted franc from this state and later on US took control of Michigan which remained the discord between US and British forces till 1812. After this, the modern day Michigan stated to develop.

The Detroit-winder son international border is between US and Canada. This is the busiest border of US shared with any other country.

2. The pride of the state

Michigan is known in the world today for its cities, supported by heavy industry, and its 11000 lakes. Its busy streets and industry oriented economy is attraction to many.

3. Nicknames

The other names with which state can be distinguished from others are the “Great lake state” and the “wolverine state”, this name war earned for the state in toledo war.

4. Lighthouses

One of the unique features of the Michigan is the largest number of lighthouses in the state compared to other states in US; the very first lighthouses were built in Michigan in 1818 and 1822. They were built to protect ships in night and landmarks at the day time to guide ships.

6. Registered boats

In the coastal areas, people own boats for many different purposes, sometimes for fishing and sometimes for other commercial uses. These boats should be registered. Michigan tops among the other states in this regard, it has over 1 million registered boats.

7. The leading state

Michigan is the leading state in the ownership of recreational boats and the granting of licenses for hunting and fishing.

8. Former World’s longest suspension bridge

The world’s busiest lock system is found in Michigan, It is home to soo locks. The Mackinac and ambassador bridges, each of them were formerly the world’s longest suspension bridges are also found in Michigan.

9. The forests

The beauty of a land is due to the natural resources and greenery it has. Michigan’s is rich in this beauty. Its 52 percent land is occupied by the forests. This land makes the total area of 18 million acres.

10. National forests

Four national forests are situated in Michigan namely; Manistee, Hiawatha, Ottawa and Huron. The Huron and Manistee forests are administratively combined.
