10 Tennessee Facts

Tennessee is the southeastern state of United States. By population it is the 17th largest state of US and by area it stands at 36th number. Majority of the soldiers in United States’ army are from this state that’s why it is also called the volunteer state. It is also called the state of smoky mountains. The state of about 5 major religions and 5 major ethnicities is one of the richest and the most important states of USA.

1. Geography

It touches its boundaries with Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Mississippi etc. Memphis is the largest city of Tennessee.

2. History

The land of Tennessee was first resided by paleo Indians about 1200o years ago. But unfortunately other cultures and ethnicities that used to be there before European arrival are not known that’s why the early history of Tennessee is just confined to paleo Indians.

3. Origin of the name

The name ‘Tennessee’ was first given to this state by a Spanish captain who was also an explorer. Before this the name of this area was Tanasqui. The name Tennessee is derived from an Indian word tina-see which means the place of meeting of people.

4. US presidents

Three of former presidents of United States do belong from this state; the names of these presidents are: Andrew Jackson, James Polk and Andrew Jhonsan.

5. Railroad Engineer

The first ever railroad engineer named Casey Jones also belongs from Tennessee; who was killed in a rail accident. Now there is a museum in honor.

6. Bluegrass music

The famous bluegrass music also originated from Tennessee, in Bristol.

7. Shelby County

There is a county named ‘Shelby county’ in Tennessee; it is the only county that has the most number of horses in the whole US.

8. Skiing surface

In Tennessee, there is the world’s largest skiing surface. This 5 acre skiing surface allows everyone in any type of weather to ski.

9. Largest aquarium

Tennessee has the largest aquarium in the world. It contains about 7000 animals and about 300 types of different fish, birds, amphibians and mammals. It is the biggest and of course the most beautiful one.

10. Largest earthquake

In the winter of 1811, America faced the largest earthquake of its history. This earthquake’s center was near Madrid, Tennessee. It is still the largest and most destructive natural disaster in America’s history. But interestingly, two lakes were formed naturally from this earthquake.
