10 Maryland Facts

The first person who explored Maryland was Capt. John Smith in 1608. He explored the first place of Maryland called Chesapeake Bay. The royal charter for Maryland was approved by Charles I in 1632. The first English settlers who settled on Maryland were Roman Catholics, the place they chose to reside was St. Clement’s (now Blakistone) Island in 1634. The Religious freedom was granted to all Christians in the Toleration Act passed by the Maryland assembly in 1649, but it was ended by a Puritan revolt, 1654–1658.The further area was added into Maryland walked by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in 1763 to 1767. In 1791, it was given up to District of Columbia. Maryland was a slave state but remained in the Union during the civil war of America. The residents of Maryland fought from both sides and many families got divided.
