10 IOWA Facts

Iowa is a northern central state of United States near the Mississippi river. This is also called ‘American heartland’; this second place defines well the importance of this place. Before European exploration this area was a part of French colony. Basically this piece of land is agro based; its fertile land is best for agriculture that’s why Iowa is also called ‘Food capital of the world’. Though it is agro-based economy but still its economy is spreading in different dimensions.

1. Origin of the name

The name of this state derived from the name of a tribe who captured this area after the European exploration; those people were called ioway people.

2. History

In mid 18th century Iowa was a part of France. After European exploration this area became a center of interest for European explorers. In early 19th century this state came under the hold if US.

3. Geography

Iowa State is surrounded by Mississippi river and Missouri river from east and west. It has 99 counties and 100 county seats.

4. Climate

Iowa’s climate is generally dense due to being surrounded by rivers from both sides. On the other hand as the land is fertile so there are thick forests that make the climate pleasant.

5. Sports

Iowa has four official sports i.e. hockey, football, soccer and basket ball.

6. Tornado and storms

Being surrounded by rivers, Iowa is the state that welcome’s most of the tornadoes and storms. So in the season of tornadoes it is not worthwhile to visit Iowa.

7. Iowa state Fair

Every year Iowa state management holds and official fair Iowa which is attended every year by millions of people. This is the most famous, biggest and the most populated fair of United States.

8. Food

Iowa is the state that produces the biggest share of food for the country. It produces about one tenth of the nation’s food. Its specialties are soybeans and corns.

9. Famous Personalities

Many famous personalities like many Hollywood actors and Herbert-Hoover the first US president also belong from Iowa; they were born here. Another famous artist Grant Wood who painted American Gothic was also born in Iowa.

10. Diversified economy

Basically the economy of Iowa is agro based but after the recession and down fall of 1980’s, Iowa’s management diversified its economy to other revenue generating fields like finance, telecommunication, industry, oil production etc and now the result is quite satisfactory.
