Plankton Facts

Planktons are small organisms that live in water and play a vital role in completion of food chain. These organisms are the best food source for marine animals and we cannot imagine marine life without existence of planktons. Here are some facts about planktons.

1. Name

Plankton is a Greek word that means wandering. This means that plankton is not the name of only one type of marine organism. Instead of it, all tiny marine animals that hardly swim themselves fall in the category of plankton.

2. Inhabitant

It is wrong concept that planktons only live I n ocean water. You can find them everywhere in deep water of ponds and lakes

3. Division

Planktons are divided into two categories. One is for small marine animals and this subdivision of plankton is called zooplankton. However, the second category that includes plants is called phytoplankton.

4. Algea

Not all types of algae is called plankton. Only small algae that we can see over ponds in the form of bright green grass are called plankton.

5. Food Source

Planktons are the basic food source for almost all types of marine animals including large and small fish. Moreover, planktons pay contribution in supply of fresh oxygen to earth atmosphere.
