10 River Facts

River is a natural source of water. Usually there is fresh water in the rivers and it is flowing. A small river can also be called stream, rivulet, creek; brook etc. rivers, seas and other water sources are a part of water cycle and are necessary for rains. The flow of river is called channel; bottom of river is called river bed and sides of river are called river banks that are usually covered with greenery; top of river is called surface.

1. Earth’s surface

Rivers are a big source of water and water covers 1/3rd of earth’s surface.

2. Earth’s area for rivers

The total area of earth’s water is about 344 million cubic miles. Half of which is covered by river water.

3. Longest Rivers

The river Nile in north Africa and Amazon in south America are the two longest rivers on the earth that run thousands miles. Nile is about 4,135 miles and Amazon is about 3980 miles long.

4. Shortest River

D River is known as the shortest river in the world. It is in United States, in the state of Oregon. It has the length of only 440 feet. But this is only according to the Guinness book of world records. Many geologists say that actually the Roe River is the shortest river in the world.

5. Source of water cycle

Rivers are a big source of rain because they play an eternal role in water cycle even much more than seas, because number of rivers is in thousand in the world.

6. Salt River

We know that the water of seas and oceans is salty; it is natural, but there is a river in Arizona state of US that also has the salty water.

7. Two colored river

There is a bi-colored river in Thailand. It has two colors i.e. brown and blue. Actually two rivers meet at a certain point so it looks like the river has two colors, but still there is a bi-colored river in Quetta-Pakistan.

8. Rivers having warm water

There are also some rivers in the world that have naturally warm water. There are several myths associated with these rivers that if you take bath with the water of these rivers, you will not have any skin disease.

9. Highest number of rivers

Canada and Poland are the two blessed countries, where, there is highest number of river and lakes.

10. Usage

River water is used for irrigation, fishing, drinking, transport and swimming.
