10 Ocean Facts

Oceans make 71% per our earth. They are huge reservoirs of water. But the water they contain is not fit to drink. Oceans are the biggest habitat for the living creatures because they contain 90 percent of the living sea creatures. Seas contain many untold and known mysteries in them. There are stories of big monsters and huge fish and crocodiles and there are also tales about mermaids and huge octopuses. In short seas are both known and unknown to men. Below are given some genuine facts about oceans.

1. Planet’s water

Oceans are huge reservoirs of water. This water keeps its self in circulation to maintain the atmosphere balance on our planet. Total of 97 percent of our earth’s planet is contained in the oceans.

2. Heat in oceans

Oceans are not just reservoirs of water but they have a complete system that makes our atmosphere in balance. The top 10 feet of oceans hold as much heat as the entire atmosphere holds. This heat cannot reach the lower levels of the sea at same level.

3. Average depth

Oceans are deep too deep. Some times at some places they are so deep that nobody could ever measure their depth. The average depth of oceans is more than 2.5 miles.

4. Challenger deep

Challenger deep is the deepest point in ocean. Its depth is 6.86 miles.  It is more than one mile deep than the tallest point of earth the Mount Everest which is 5.49 miles.

5. Longest mountain chain

The longest mountain chain in the universe that is known to exist is under the oceans in our world. These are 40,000 miles long.

6. Arctic ice sheet

Every year in winters, arctic ice sheet is developed on Arctic Ocean. This sheet is so huge and big that is equal to the size of United States.

7. Ocean pressure

The pressure of water is light in near waters. But as we move deeper and deeper, this pressure increases and at the deepest point of ocean, the pressure is 8 tones per square inch. This is so much that we can compare it to a man who tries to hold 50 jumbo jets at one time.

8. Gold

Gold is the metal for which people fought wars, they died and they are still fighting. There is huge amount of gold in the oceans. It is said that there is 20 million tons of gold in the oceans.

9. Deep ocean life

The animals residing in deep seas cannot sea because no light can reach there. So they live on chemical energy instead of light energy.

10. Barrier reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure that can be seen from moon. It is 1,243 miles long.
