10 Desert Facts

Desert is said a wasteland or a land not fit to be used for cultivation or not fit to be lived in. but desert is one of the mysteries of the nature. They make the earth diverse in its outlook as well as with respect to the habitat. Mostly people think that deserts are sand only. But deserts also contain rocks. The water content is the most scares and most needed thing in desert. There are few facts about deserts given in below lines.

1. Arid and semi arid area of earth

The one third part of the land of earth is either arid or semiarid. This means that deserts comprise of a large area of our land.

2. Dry lands

There are 60 countries is world which have dry land area. There are 30 counties in total that are 75 percent dry land. These countries are mainly situated in Africa and Asia.

3. The longest desert area

The world’s longest dry land is made by the saharn-arabian-iranian-thar desert.  This covers the area of 6000 miles and it is tracked from Africa to Pakistan.

4. The occupation and use

Deserts cannot be used to settle down in like cities because they lack many basic things that human settlement need. But deserts are not lonely places because right from the beginning of the human race, deserts have been used by different purposes.

5. The plants and animals

Although deserts are deserted places, but it does not mean they have no life. Desert contains many species of plants which are not found in any other part of the world. There are around 3000 plants species and many thousands species of invertebrates and 550 vertebrate species found in the sonorant desert of North America. This desert contains the largest amount of species on earth.

6. The species who never drink water

There are some desert species like the kangaroo rats of North American desert, which never drink water because they do their need of water full from the seeds they eat.

7. Bees

It is an amazing fact about deserts and savannas that they contain more number of bees than the wetter places. The sonorant desert and southern Arizona have around 1000 to 1200 bee species and individual bees living there.

8. Cactus

Cactus is the plant that can only grow in deserts though people now have learnt techniques to plant them in their own houses by providing them the desert climate. There are 2,500 species of cactus plant that are all found in American desert and hot areas.

9. Largest cactus

The largest cactus in the world is called Cardon. It is found in deserts of Baja, California, and Sonora. They can grow up to 20 meters in height and live for 200 years.

10. Termites

Because deserts are too dry places for fungi to grow, so for the decaying function deserts have termits.
