Tiahuanaco Facts

Tiahuanaco, an archeologist site of western Bolivia, is one of the ancient ruins in the world. There was time, when Tiahuanaco was the center of Inca Empire and was a flourished and developed place of present South America. It is famous for many ancient architectures and artwork, especially “Gate of the Sun”. Here are some facts about Tiahuanaco.

1. Location

Tiahuanaco is located by the shore of Lake Titicaca in western Bolivia at a distance of 55 km and at an altitude of 13,300 feet. Now, it is about 800 feet high as compared to surface level of Lake Titicaca.

2. Discovery of Site

Tiahuanaco was discovered in 1549, when a Spanish conquistador Pedro Cieza de León found it in the high mountains during his search for capital of Inca Empire.

3. A Former Developed Site

Tiahuanaco was really a developed agricultural site even in 1500 BC. Moreover, during 300-1000 AD, Tiahuanaco was in great power and was considered as the astral centre for the people, who made their pilgrimages in it.

4. Monumental Architecture

Tiahuanaco is famous for splendid monumental architectural work that comprises large stones of extraordinary art work, monumental structures and developed drainage system. Akapana, Pumapunku and Kalasasaya and the most famous Gateway of the Sun are the names of some historic and catchy monumental structures.

5. Gate Way of Sun

Gate Way of the Sun is an ancient solid structure of Tiahuanaco that was constructed about 1500 BC. This historic structure has dimension like 9.8 feet height and 13 feet width with an estimated weight of 10 tons.
