Sacsayhuaman Facts

Sacsayhuaman or Saksaq Waman is an ancient stone wall complex near the Cusco city of Peru. According to natives, the meaning of Sacsayhuaman is “House of the Sun”. It looks like a fortress and many people have firm believe upon its historic value. Here are some facts about Sacsayhuaman.

1. Location

This historic piece of architecture is located at an altitude of 3701 meters from the sea surface and situated on a steep hill that is about 7 km far from the center of Cusco city, Peru.

2. History

It is believed that this splendid archeologist complex or fortress was built by Killke people in the era between 900-1200 AD before the domination of Inca Empire. Later on, it was the capital of Inca Empire.

3. Walls of Sacsayhuaman

The walls of Sacsayhuaman are approx. 1000 feet in length and about 15 feet high and made from more than 200 tons blocks of limestone and rocks.

4. Chincanas

Sacsayhuaman is the route of many chincanas that are underground catacombs that connect this historic piece of architect to the other Inca structures.

5. Inti Raymi

Nowadays, Inti Raymi or annual Inca festival is celebrated near Sacsayhuaman every year on 24th June. Moreover, this place is has become favorite for athletes and many other sports as well.
