Vampire Bats Facts

Vampire Bats, as clear from the name, are bloodsucking small mammals that belong to Bat species. There are many other interesting facts about vampire bats including their blood drinking habits, which is obviously a weird and terrifying behavior. Here are some facts about vampire bats.

1. Survival on Blood

Blood sucking and drinking is not just a habit of vampire bats, but this is the diet of these mammals. A naturally occurring substance “draculin” make the victim’s blood, a digestive food for them.

2. Description

Vampire bats are short bodied mammals with average weight just 40 gram. The other body organs include short ears, small tail membrane and a small conical muzzle.  The interesting thing in their bodies is infrared sensor which helps in tracing the blood floating areas close to the skin of animals.

3. Species of Vampire Bats

There are three species of vampire bats named as Common Vampire bats, White winged vampire bats and hairy legged vampire bats.

4. Habitat

The habitat of vampire bats mines, caves and hollow trees and the area of their living is America. The densely populated areas of vampire bats are Mexico, Argentine, Chile and Brazil

5. Strange Habits

Some strange habits of vampire bats which differentiate them from other bat species are walking, running and even jumping. These mammals can run at a speed up to 2.2 meters per seconds.
