Macaw Facts

Macaws are colorful parrots, which have various sizes. There are 18 species of macaws in the world, six of them are extinct and some others are endangered. This Parrot is known for its large size and colorful appearance. Here are some facts about Macaw.

1. Habitat

These parrots are native to rainforest but they are also found in South America, Mexico and Caribbean. Some species are found in Savannah and other woodland habitats too.

2. Appearance

Their beaks are large and dark in color, usually black. A yellow patch around the eyes, distinguish macaw from other species. A macaw’s facial feather is as unique as finger prints in human beings.

3. Largest parrot

Macaws are largest parrots in the world. Its species Hyacinth Macaw has largest wing spread and length in world. The heaviest macaw is Buffon’s.

4. Diet

Macaws eat a verity of food, which includes fruits, nuts, seeds, leaves, flowers. Some foods contain some toxic substances and to neutralize their effect they are found to eat clay from river banks. However, this behavior is limited to Amazon region only.

5. Threats

Macaws are facing many threats, which include deforestation i.e. Cutting large trees deprive them of their home. Moreover, illegal trapping for bird trade is also a big threat for them.
