Hamsters Facts

Hamsters belong to a subfamily circadian which contains 25 species.  They are crepuscular animals. Earlier they were known as rodents. They introduced as a pet in 1948 by a highway engineer Albert marsh. Here are some facts about Hamsters.

Shape and size

A hamster has a chunky body. They have thick fur on their body and a short tail. Their different species have different size, normally they are 5.5 to 10 cm long.

Habitat

They live underground in burrows. In day light they do not leave their burrows but at night they come out and go back when getting dark.

Food

They eat a variety of food.  They eat dry food including nuts, berries, vegetable and different fruits. They eat fruits and seeds in wild.

Behavior

They show different behavior in all species. They are nocturnal but seem very active after day. They prefer to live together and feel sad if get alone specially male hamsters.

Hamster as Pet

They are used for labs as well as a pet. They are very inexpensive. They have very few problems regarding health. A hamster can be an excellent pet and also a part of family.
