Hammerhead Shark Facts

Hammerhead shark got its name due to unusual structure of its head. The head of this shark is flattened and extended into a hammer shape. These sharks are found almost in all the seas of the world. There are nine species of hammerhead shark in the world. Here are some facts about this amazing shark.

1. Home

These sharks are found worldwide, along the Cost lines and around continental shelves. Large groups can be found near Colombia, Hawaii and Costa Rica. They are also commonly found in Southern and Eastern Africa.

2. Social life

We can find these sharks roaming in the form of groups during the day. However, they become solitary hunters during the night.

3. Diet

Hammerhead shark has a great sense of smell, which help them to locate food. They eat small fish, small sharks, sting rays and squids.

4. Physical features

Hammerhead shark can e as long as 6 meters. A mature shark weighs around 1,000 pounds. However, there are variations, according to sex and age. The color of the shark is usually grey- brown; however some verities are olive green.

5. Reproduction

A female shark gives birth to 15 to 30 pups at a time. Gestation period is around one year. Young ones get separated from mother, right after the birth. Majority of the young sharks survive due to their unusual appearance.
