Bison Facts

Bison is a large animal, which we can group with cattle, yaks and gaur. These even toed animals are found in North America and also called as American buffalo. They belong to the genus Bison, while family species and sub species are present. Here are some facts about Bison.

1. Swimmers

Bison is a large animal; rather largest terrestrial animal in North America but it is good swimmer and can easily cross rivers and other small water bodies.

2. Social behavior

Bison travel in herds, males and females have different herds. Male herds are smaller as compared to female Herds. Both sexes come together in breeding season only, which is usually at the end of summer.

3. Species

American bison and European Bison are two different species of Bison. Both species are different in their behavior and physical appearance. American bison has 15 ribs while European has 14. American bison has more hair on body as compared to European bison.

4. Wallowing

Bison are seen wallowing in shallow depression, either wet or dry. They role in these depressions and cover themselves with mud and dust. Usually they do so to get rid of ticks and lice, which live on their bodies.

5. Temperament

Bison have unpredictable temperament. They appear peaceful and sometimes lazy; however they can attack anything without any reason.
