10 Wolves Facts

A wolf is a large carnivore mammal that belongs to the dog family and is the largest and strongest member of its family. Wolves live and hunt in groups and their groups are known as “wolf packs”. Usually wolves are in gray color but they can also be found in brown, white or black color. Wolves are known as a dangerous animal especially when they live near human communities because they attack on their cattle and sometimes on humans also.

Wolf is generally categorized according to color and characteristics i.e. gray wolf which is also known as timber wolf, red wolf, Ethiopian wolf, Eastern wolf, Maned wolf, Tundra wolf, Italian wolf etc.

2: Characteristics of wolves according to classification

Timber wolf is known for its most destructive and excessive hunting nature. Red wolf is the rarest wolf, Ethiopian wolf is also known as kebro wolf and Mexican wolf is a distinct species of gray wolf.

3. Jaws of wolf

A wolf has extremely powerful jaws that can generate 1500 psi pressure. This is equivalent to pressure generated by several pressure-cookers at a time. These jaws can break a human neck within seconds.

4. Wolf howl

Wolf howls are not the only mean that the wolf uses for communication within a pack, rather they use body posture, scents and facial expressions also for communication.

5. Territory

Like other animals, wolves are also very possessive for their territory; they can attack on other wolves also if they try to occupy their area.

6. Hunting

Nature has put a special ability in each of its creation. Wolves are blessed with the ability of catching the animal far bigger than wolf e.g. an elephant.

7. Speed

The average speed of a wolf (during chasing its target) is 28 to 40 miles per hour. This speed is the first biggest weapon a wolf has; first is its sharp pointed teeth.

8. Wolf packs

A hierarchy is followed in all wolf packs. The most dominant member of pack is the leader and other members obey and follow the leader. They also bring food and take care of small pups of their packs.

9. Residence

Wolves live in 48 different countries of world but their population is shrinking day by day. One reason of this can be that almost 50% of pups die at the time of birth.

10. Bonds

In each pack, every wolf is joined with other with a special emotional bond; if this bond is not their each wolf would go on its own way.
