10 Owl Facts

Owl belongs to the category of birds. At some parts of world, owl is thought as a wise bird, while in some other parts of world, this bird is thought to be an evil and curse. In many cultures they are seen as Nobel and wise, and they are also included in Halloween celebrations along with spiders and bats. There are many magicians, who contain this animal in their offices and the places they live. Mainly they are associated with magic. They have a distinct feature of silent flight. 1. Species

There are 205 species of owls in the world. There is another division of owls based on their nature, there are two groups of owls, barn owls and true owls. There are only 16 species in barn owl group and 190 species in true owls.

2. Prey

Owls hunt the rabbits, mice and other small mammals. They are predictors by nature. They also eat small birds. Owl cannot eat like us they only swallow like all other bird, because they do not have teeth.

3. Hunt In Dark

Owls mostly hunt at night in dark. They do not hunt in day time because they avoid competition with other birds like hawks and eagles. There are only few species of owls that hunt in day time.

4. Their Eyes

Owls have a strange and distinct feature and this is their eyes. Their eyes are fit in a socket and they cannot move their eyes, to lock in different directions they move their head. They have a well developed binocular vision unlike many birds.

5. Feathers

The feathers of owl have been created especially for silent flight which is their unique feature. They fly without making much noise.

6. Legend Of Owl

This is neither a movie nor a story, they are present is many culture especially the ancient Egyptians culture famous for the magic and like activities. Owls’ paintings were also found in French caves that date back to 15,000 to 20,000 years.

7. Ears

Owls’ ears are behind their eyes and are hidden under feathers. The two feathery ears seen on the head of owls are the show-off ears and they have nothing to do with their hearing. Owls, are very good hears.

8. Feet

The feet of owl are designed especially to capture prey easily. They have one toe on the forward and two on backward.

9. Bill

Owls have a strong and long bill, but in many species their bill is half covered with the feathers. They use their bills to tear the larger preys.

10. Sounds

Owls do not only hoot which is a sign of territorial declaration, they also make other vocalizations to show other emotions and expressions.
