10 Jaguar Facts

A jaguar is such a wild animal that belongs to feline family of cats. You can also call this big cat, as third largest feline specie of cats all over the globe. The spotted physical appearance of jaguar resembles with leopard. However, in terms of habits it looks like tigers.  Anyhow, here are some cool facts about jaguars.

1. place of Living

The place of living for most of the jaguars is nothing but the southern part of USA as well as Mexico. In these areas, this fierce animal lives near water, especially in rain forests and in seasonal swamps.

2. Physical appearance:

A jaguar weighs around 200 to 250 pounds and normally it is 6 to 8 feet long. They are yellowish brown in color and have dark angular rings on their skin. They resemble with leopards, but a close observation can tell that they are different. Their life is usually 15 to 20 years.

3. Strongest jaws in cat family

As mentioned earlier, that they belong to cat family. They are the third largest member of the family after tiger and lion, but they have the strongest jaws. It is said that they can break shells of tortoises.

4. Black panthers

Melanistic Jaguars are called as black panthers, but they are not a different species.

5. Diet

Like other member of cat family, Jaguars are also flash eaters, but their prey is usually large animals like foxes, dogs and more interestingly even anaconda.

6. Sound

Unlike other members of cat family, the roar of jaguar is not threatening, rather it sounds like deep cough. Many people say that it is the only cat which does not roar.

7. Climbers and swimmers

Unlike other members of the family they are great climbers and swimmers. They can easily climb on tress and can eat unaware monkeys. Similarly, they are not afraid of water and like to live near water bodies. They can also hunt fish and other marine life.

8. Night hunters

Jaguars are night hunters, and they can kill their prey with a single strike. That is the reason they are called as jaguars means “The beast which can kill its prey with one bound”.

9. Cubs

A female jaguar gives birth to one to four cubs. They are blind at the time of birth. They stay with their mother for the training of hunting and she saves them from hunters, including their father.

10. Threatened species

Jaguars are ranked among the threatened species; as the number of the jaguars is rapidly decreasing due to hunting and habitat lose.
