10 Horses Facts

Horses are called the faithful animals because of their nice nature. People keep horses as pets and as commercial animals. The world famous derby race has the world’s best and healthy horses. The Arab culture gives importance to horses because arabs are particularly famous for horses races and keeping the best species of horses. To some up, horses are not only pets but also commercial animals let us see some facts about them.

1. In taking water

Horses do not drink water like dogs and cats and many other animals because they do not have that special feature that dog are cats have. They when drink water suck it.

2. Their young

Horses give birth to young as every mammal does. A baby female is called filly, a baby male horse is called colt. But both baby girl and baby boy are also called foal.

3. They drink milk at birth

When the baby horses are born, they do not eat grass because they simply cannot reach the ground for the fact that their legs at that are longer compared to their body. They only drink their mother’s milk.

4. Foals

The baby horses are too weak at the time of their birth. Their bones are very weak at that time so they cannot stand within the hour they are born. After an hour they learn how to stand.

5. They born at night

An interesting fact about horses is that they normally give birth at night. So many baby horses are born at night time.

6. They have same birthday

The horses grown for commercial use i.e. races etc. are born at same day, because they are born thoroughbreds. So it makes it easy for their owners to keep the racing record and other readings.

7. Their tail

Horses have tails with long hair on them. Sometimes these hairs are trimmed and sometimes they are let that way. The tail is not just for fly swatting but it serves the purpose of communication of feeling to other horses.

8. Their height

The horse’s height is not measured with the traditional measuring tools but they use a special tool for that, THE HUMAN HANDS. One hand = four inches.

9. Equus

Equus is the Greek word which means quickness. Horses belong to this family. They have been put in this family because of their quickness.

10. Pony

Well, we see the cartoons in which beautiful fairy horses are shown by the name pony. In reality ponies do not have wings or alien features. A full grown horse with a short height is called pony.
