10 Giraffe Facts

Tall, long necked giraffes are one of the most amazing creatures. They are cute despite of their enormous height and harmless despite of their huge body. They are herbivores. Giraffes are loved by kids the most. They are often very calm and peaceful but they get furious too. With their long neck, food is easily available for them in the form of fresh leaves at the upper part of the trees. Below are given some more facts about giraffes

1. Tallest land mammals

Giraffes are the tallest land mammals. The new born calves of the giraffes are six feet long at the time of their birth. The males of giraffes grow up to 18 feet long with their neck as much as 6 feet long.

2. Just one specie

Giraffes have only one specie and nine sub species. These subspecies are recognized by the patterns on their skin. The word giraffe means the one who walks swiftly. They are like camels in the sense that they also have a hump on their back and can live without water for long due to succulent diet of acacia leaves.

3. Big heart

They have a big heart, truly a big heart by size. they need high blood pressure from their 26 pounds heart to stop them from fainting when they raise their head from ground. This means that they need hell lot of energy to do so.

4. Tongue

Giraffes have 18 inches long tongue. The color of their tongue is blue-black. This is a very tough piece of meat and it cannot be harmed by the thrones and hard bunches when they eat from trees.

5. Their ancient honor

Giraffes are not new to the planet. From the ancient cave carving and ancient Egyptian art it is found that even then the giraffes were the same. Their tail hair are used to make jewelry and their burning skin is used to treat nose bleeding in some tribes. Giraffes are never hunted like other animals.

6. They are not mute

The cool, calm and peaceful giraffe was used to be thought as a mute animal which makes no sounds. But the research has shown that they communicate at infra sound level, not audible to humans.

7. Food

They have to take 34 kilos of food every day to fuel themselves. That’s why they spend most of their time eating. They themselves become food of famous predators though not in adult hood but in young age. As much as half of the calves do not reach adulthood.

8. Life span and birth

The life span of the giraffes in wild is only 25 years. They can reach up to 28 years in captivity. The female giraffe gives birth to one child at a time; the young calf needs full protection which is provided to it.

9. Different patterns

Like unique finger prints, giraffes have unique skin spots.

10. Sleep while standing

Giraffes sleep while they stand. They do not sleep in sitting position because of their size which is the biggest hindrance for them sometimes.
