10 Dogs Facts

Dog is a faithful animal, as everybody knows. Dogs are not only pets but they rescue houses and are best friends of their men. Dogs are also kept by the police for search because their sniffing power is very sharp. They are kept by the fire barged in order to assist them in finding alive and dead humans. They are kept by the airport security in order to assist them to sniff the luggages for drugs or weapons. Hence dogs are very useful.

1. Man’s best friend

Dogs are called man’s best friend which is true to the core. Dogs are kept as pet by many. In the western world, dogs are considered as family members. Dogs are faithful to their masters and at time of need they can even sacrifice their own lives to save their men.

2. Their relation with humans is old

The scientists say that dogs are man’s pet from 14000 years. They belong to the wolf family. Scientists found this fact about dogs from ancient carvings, pottery and cave drawings.

3. Categories

Romans are the first nation who categorized dogs as house dogs, shepherd dogs, war dogs, sporting dog, dogs ran by scent and that run by sight.

4. Modern grouping

Today, more than three hundred species of dogs exist around the globe. They are divided into seven groups namely; terrier, hound, sporting, working, toy, herding and non-sporting.

5. Their breeds

Dogs vary in their characteristics from breed to breed. The smallest breed of dogs is called Chihuahua and the tallest is called Irish wolf-hound. The Chihuahua was only 5 inch long from shoulders and weighs only 4 pounds. The st. Bernard is the heaviest dog with 200 pounds of weight.

6. Hair

The Yorkshire terrier has as long as 2 feet while there are some dogs with no hair. Dog’s fur can be curly or straight, some dogs have two coats that protect them from rain and snow.

7. Anatomy

Despite of their difference in appearance, every dog has the same anatomy. They have 321 bones and 42 teeth, these teeth are permanent. Most dogs have the ability to detect the scent far better than any other animal. They can also hear the high pitched sound.

8. New born

The new born puppies are helpless at the time of their birth. They are born blind and able to see after 13 to 15 days of their birth. Within 4 to 10 weeks, they became attached to their mothers and siblings. They normally mature at 6 months of age.

9. Body temperature

The normal body temperature of dogs is 101.5 degree Fahrenheit. If their temperature rises above this , they take their tongue out.

10. Life span

The shorter dogs live longer than the taller dogs. Shorter dogs mature earlier than the taller ones.
