10 Butterfly Facts

Butterflies come under the group of insects. Butterflies have wings that are beautiful, colorful and designed. There are many species of butterflies that have very many different designed wings with different colors. Butterflies are so beautiful that mostly, jewelry is designed and molded on the pattern of butterflies. Kids capture them and keep them in their books. But butter flies are not the same always i.e. at the time of their birth, they are caterpillars. And then from caterpillars they become butterflies.

1. Cold Blooded

Butterflies are cold blooded insects. They do not get their body temperature from their blood but they have to rely on the sun raise to get the body temperature to survive and get the energy.

2. Territorial

Butterflies are territorial. They do not allow strangers to get into their area. If it happens they fight and by chasing the intruder out of the territory.

3. Ultraviolet

Butterflies cannot see like humans. They can see ultraviolet light which is invisible to humans. They go to the nectar by using these UV. Some butterflies have ultraviolet markings on their wings which cannot be seen by humans except other butterflies.

4. Pollinators

Butterflies are pollinators; they take the pollen of other plants from one place to another. Though they are not as abundant as bees but they are important for this purpose. Bees are home based while butterflies fly randomly.

5. Nectar Plants

Nectar plants are the source of inviting butterflies. And larval plants are source of raising larva of butterflies. The nectar plants are of bright colors with sweet smell.

6. Species

There are 20,000 known species of butterflies in the world and 200,000 moths’ species has been discovered up till now.

7. Slanted Movement

The movement of butterflies in slanted. They move on the principle of airplane. They have a strong thorax muscles which helps them beat their wings up and down to fly upwards.

8. The Life Span

Butterflies lay eggs and it takes them 5 to 6 days to hatch them. They lay their eggs. It takes 3 to 4 week for the caterpillar to pupate and 9 to 14 days to become an adult.

9. Female Butterflies

Female butterflies liver longer than male butterflies. They are also bigger in size than males. They give a scent in the air that male butterflies can smell.

10. Weight

The weight of butterflies is as much as two rose petals. Though they weigh too light but they can fly thousands of miles.
